The following 12 pedagogues made the annual pilgrimage to Rye GC earlier this week for our two-day fixture:
Dai Bader, Emma Bader, David Atkins, Nicky Carter, Tom Allen, Adam Naylor, John Cox, Peter Kemp, Andy Wolstenholme, Richard (Rick) Bodenham, Chris Betts & Robin (The Guv) Griffths.
Arriving at Rye with strong winds and having travelled through heavy rain we were not optimistic about ‘enjoying’ the first 18 holes, despite a slightly improving forecast.
However, fortified by a magnificent Rye lunch and a glass or two of wine (see below) we were finally persuaded to leave the warmth of the clubhouse to commence our 36-hole match.
Conditions were extremely challenging, so we were delighted for the scores to be level 3 vs 3 after the first 18 holes with wins for Adkins & Bodenham and Kemp & Wolstenholme and halves for Cox & Naylor and Betts & Griffiths.
It was also nice to see the Pedagogues flag (slightly more than fluttering) outside the clubhouse.
After a visit to a couple of local hostelries and a meal (see below) we were even daring to think that we maybe in a position to win the match. However, those of us who have played before know that Rye’s team for the second round is normally selected to put us in our place. Our cautious optimism was also tempered by the weather as, yet another storm came through overnight and much studying of the various weather apps took place at breakfast. Finally, the winds dropped (to a 2-club wind) and the rain abated and we were able to enjoy some relatively benign conditions.
Although Bader (D) & Carter lost the opening match and Adkins & Wolstenholme lost the final one the rest went in favour of the Pedagogues with Cox & Bader (E), Kemp & Allen, Naylor & Betts and Bodenham & Griffiths all winning.
Match result was a rare win for the Pedagogues 7 vs Rye GC 5
Our thanks go to Dai Bader our Match Manager for organising everything so magnificently – apart from the weather !!!
